I've seen various theories about Gon's character arc. Some say:

Gon will be a Specialist. Will Gon get his Nen back? We don't know, but some say that if he does, he'll be a Specialist. I don't like this theory. If Gon gets his Nen back, I don't want him to be anything but an Enhancer--and especially not a Specialist. This is because one of Gon's problems is that he isn't a very good Enhancer. There's a conversation Gon has with Wing when he calls to ask him for advice.
Wing: Ha ha, a 'special attack'? Is that what you call it? The bottom line is Enhancers don't need one.

Gon: Why not?

Wing: They're the most balanced in offense and defense. Practice Ten and Ren, and you'll produce enough force to be quite destructive.
Gon wants an all-powerful, unstoppable super attack, something to stop his opponents in a single move--like Kurapika--but Wing tells him that Enchancers don't work best with attacks like that. Enhancers are better when emphasizing or, you know, enhancing what they can already do. Unfortunately, Gon doesn't think much of his abilities.
Wing: Gon. If I were the judge, I would be disappointed by a slapdash 'Special Attack'. You're too obsessed by the idea to impose some special restrictions. You know you were plenty powerful enough back when you were still here.
Gon: Really?!

Wing: Of course.
Gon is a confident kid, usually proud of his abilities, but he doubts his skill as a Hunter. He even tells Wing: 'Everyone I've met has been so awesome. I must be the weakest Pro Hunter ever.' Gon attempts to compensate for his insecurities by being reckless and putting his energy into attacks that don't play to his strengths. That's why if Gon gets his Nen back, I want him to still be an Enhancer and create a Hatsu that suits him better.

Others say Gon needs to fight Hisoka. He doesn't. Sure, fighting Hisoka again could be one way to end Gon's arc, but it isn't necessary. Unlike other shonen protagonists, Gon doesn't have a consistent enemy or an eternal rival to butt heads with because he is his own worst enemy. He does more damage to himself than any of the bad guys actually do. When Killua runs to Gon's side during the Gon vs. Pitou fight, Killua doesn't have to protect Gon from Pitou--Pitou's already dead--he has to stop Gon from killing himself. Gon needs to sort himself out before he 'needs' to fight anybody else.
