Gon and Binolt

Bisky: He’s a murderer, you know.

Gon: Yeah. But he did us a favor.

When training with Binolt is finished, Gon spares his life, making the call to let him go free. Most fans say Gon spares Binolt because he helped them, but this order of logic is backwards: Gon never wanted Binolt to die. Even before he helped Gon and Killua or did anything for them.

Bisky’s original proposition to Binolt (after she beats him):

I’ll give you a second chance. Evade the kids’ attacks for two weeks!! If you do, I’ll let you go. If you get hit and collapse or can’t stand anymore, I’ll kill you.

If Binolt loses, she’ll kill him. This statement is met with a surprised exclamation point from Gon. We don’t exactly what Gon’s feeling or thinking, but he reacts to it. This is important.

Unfortunately for Binolt, he gets his ass kicked by Gon and Killua the very first day. But as Killua goes in for the finishing blow, Gon yells to stop.

Killua: Why’d you stop me?

Gon: We still have time!! Let’s keep going until we can deal with him one on one!

Gon’s right. Keeping Binolt around to practice with—and on—is a good way for Gon and Killua to get experience. It’s also a good way to keep Binolt alive. If Gon and Killua had beaten him on the first day, Bisky could’ve very well killed him. This practice arrangement benefits both parties—which is exactly as Gon wants it.

At the end of training when Gon thanks Binolt, Bisky lets him go. She asks Gon:

Was this your plan all along? He’s a murderer, you know.

Keeping Binolt alive was Gon’s goal. While I don’t think Gon had definite opinions either way on whether Binolt should die or not, I don’t think he’s completely comfortable at the thought of Binolt dying so he came up with a way to keep Binolt alive and justify letting him live.

Gon and Genthru

Genthru: I’ll show you what real bargaining is. The trick is to show how calm yet crazy you are.

Genthru (about Gon later): He’s utterly insane!

In his fight against Genthru, Gon resorts to more extreme tactics than he’s ever used before against an opponent, including letting his arms get blown up. It’s not that Genthru is that much more difficult than other opponents he’s faced—especially not with Bisky and Killua’s training and strategy—but Gon wants to prove he can do it his own way. And if he wins, he doesn’t have to face any consequences.

After the fight, when Genthru begs for his flunky to be healed with Angel’s Breath Killua says:

That was our plan to begin with. That’s why we prepared “clones” for all six of us.

Gon goes into his fight with Genthru knowing that if he wins and makes it out alive, he can be completely healed. Readers—especially first-time readers—don’t know this. But Gon does. Gon knows he has free reign to lose his shit and do whatever he wants, because if he wins everything will fixed. Everything will be okay.
